BMI or Body Mass Index is a way of estimating the amount of body fat with the input of height and weight of an individual. They are usually calculated using a formula:

BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m)2

It has been commonly deduced to be an appropriate measure of whether a person is overweight or obese and can indicate up to a certain extent if there is a risk of weight related diseases. Weight calculations can be done in different ways but BMI is one of few ways which is easy and cost effective.

There are no special requirements for it and also the results though indicative are fairly accurate of the measure body fat in a person.

BMI – as a tool in weight watch

As mentioned above, BMI is not accurate method to measure body fat in a person but rather an estimate of amount of fat in a person using their weight and height.

It is a mathematical calculation which gives a result and is compared to a list which has been formed by compiling a huge amount of data.

The data to which the result of one’s BMI result is compared to indicate the amount of body fat is:

  • BMI lower than 18.5 indicates the person is underweight in accordance to their height.
  • BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 indicates that the person has normal fat in their body.
  • People with BMI between 25 and 29.9 are considered overweight as per their height.
  • A BMI over 30 indicates the person is obese and needs immediate weight loss and medical advice.

This scale has been arranged with a lot of data compiled on the basis of huge data from different individuals. The measure of the body fat is affected by the amount muscle in the body and race of the person.

A BMI score gives an indication to the person where they fall in the scale but if accurate measure is final goal for an individual than it might not be the appropriate way.

Advantages of BMI

  1. It is a simple and cost effective method.
  2. It can be calculated by an individual themselves.
  3. It gives a fairly accurate indication of body fat according to height.


  1. It is not an exact measure of body fat of an individual.
  2. It does not take into account the muscle content or race of a person which are contributing factors in measure of body fat.
  3. It is only an indicator and is based on data accumulated from several individuals. There is no scope for exceptions and hence, is not an absolute tool for body fat calculations.


It can be concluded that BMI is an effective tool for weight calculations for general population. It is simple, self-calculative and does not require special equipment. Though it is only an indicator, it is a fairly accurate one and gives the person the right information about their body.
